FWCD’s 4-H Horticulture Club has been sprucing up the garden area outside of the Fischer Dining Pavilion. The 20 students in the club are keeping the flowerbeds looking great and learning so much in the process. Stop by to admire their work. View the slideshow.

One of the beds is used for fruits, vegetables and herbs because it gets enough sun. In this bed, the kids amended the soil, mixed in nutrient-dense compost, planted seed, and watered the area. The theme for planting: fall produce, including carrots, lettuce, spinach, chard, radishes, herbs, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower.

The students ideally have a workday once a month. Their next meeting will focus on planting in the shaded bed with the goal of gaining inspiration from a traditional English shade bed. They are learning what can be planted in the sun versus the shade and why.

During the colder months, 4-H members will work on projects, such as planting seeds in their little greenhouses and watching them grow into seedlings, ready to go in the garden next spring! Clayton Bowman, father of Bradleigh ’29 and Waverly ’34, and Mark Lichaj, Upper School Chemistry Teacher, serve as advisors to the Horticulture Club.
