Hosting the Southwest Preparatory Conference Winter Championships

If you do not have a child in the Upper School, you might not be fully aware of what was happening on campus last Thursday, Friday and Saturday (February 13-15). Along with Trinity Valley School and The Oakridge School, we were hosting soccer, basketball, wrestling and swimming championships (actually at the Keller ISD Natatorium) for varsity athletes.
As with most everything in our school community, I am proud to have people comment on how amazing our campus and facilities are. First-time visitors are consistently struck by the beautiful fields and gyms, the stunning trees and grounds, the amazing buildings, the security booths, and even the layout of the roads.
Much more important to me than the deserved compliments for our campus and building and grounds, though, are the comments about the FWCD people our guests come across. Take our concessions stands in the gym and out at Rosacker Stadium and Howard Field, and our Hospitality Room (in the Lou and Nick Martin Campus Center). We had Lower and Middle and Upper School faculty and staff and parents and guardians volunteering to serve in those spaces. Some brought their own younger children along for the adventure. One decided we needed hot chocolate at the stadium, so she (Jennifer Ramos, Middle School Spanish Teacher) brought her own instant packets and a teapot from home. Cindy Allen, from my office, and Christy Lennox, from Peggy Wakeland’s office, spent all of Saturday maintaining the Hospitality Room. If you know Christy and Cindy, you know they specialize in rolling out red carpets: They made absolutely fabulous impressions on our visiting referees, coaches, Athletic Directors and Heads of School.
While the student-athletes were the stars with second place finishes in wrestling (losing only to 4A St. John’s of Houston), and also in the 3A (smaller school) division for girls swimming and girls basketball and third place finishes for boys basketball and soccer, fourth place for girls’ soccer, and our four-member boys swim team, we can be so very proud of our community once again stepping up as wonderful hosts.
