Core Values Creativity

This year, 12 fourth-graders were finalists in the core values T-shirt design contest. Ava Long was voted the winner for her design titled “May the Core Values Be With You!”

Lower School “Specials” work as interdisciplinary teams to support and complement curriculum projects and initiatives throughout the school year. One such project is the fourth-grade T-shirt. Years ago, Health and Wellness Counselor Theresa Fuss taught fourth-grade leadership classes, and she designed a shirt with the motto “Leading with Heart.” Now, Dorrine DeChant, Visual Arts Teacher, has expanded that idea to include a unit on graphic design where the students can create their own leadership T-shirt that focuses on FWCD’s core values.

To kick off the creative process, Fuss talked about FWCD core values – integrity, kindness, courage, respect, responsibility, scholarship -- to ensure the students understood its meaning. DeChant then inspired the students to ponder what core values mean to them so they could create original ideas to illustrate what that core value means to them.

Each year, the fourth-graders put forth inspiring designs. Ava Long was voted the winner for her design titled “May the Core Values Be With You!” The following 11 students were finalists:

  • Nathalie Mae Blair
  • Natalie Burdman
  • Cormac Dollahite
  • Ethan Ferguson
  • Ryder Halpern
  • Monty Holmsten
  • Benjamin Ivory
  • Robin Lutz
  • Alice O’Neill
  • Sophie Ratino
  • Boyce Simmons
