Margaret Anderson ’25 is FWCD’s Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship nominee. Students must be nominated by their high school to apply. Recipients are chosen based on character, community service, leadership, and varsity sport participation.

A member of Student Council, Anderson plays field hockey and soccer and manages the boys baseball team. Outside of school, she has played a significant role in the success of the College Ready Program, which provides college necessities from residence hall needs to school supplies and laptop computers to college-bound students from the Como neighborhood.

Field Hockey Coach Paige Farris Chisholm ’87 has worked with Anderson for seven years. “Margaret is an overall amazing person. She is dependable, always ready to practice and compete,” she said. “Margaret’s work ethic is second to none; she puts in the time, energy and effort in and out of season to be the best she can be. She is a consummate teammate, always putting the team first. The team agrees with me because they voted her MVP her junior year and Captain this year.”

A starter on the varsity soccer team since her freshman year, Anderson has been a key player for the team for three years. “Margaret is multi-talented and an enjoyable student-athlete to work with,” said Soccer Coach Sean Maloney. “She can play multiple positions on the soccer field and has a knack for contributing with timely goals and assists.”

Director of Athletics Leigh Block taught Anderson in AP English Literature last year. “Margaret is terrific! She’s a very diligent worker. She reads thoughtfully and expresses herself exceptionally well in class discussion and her writing,” he said. “She has a positive attitude in the classroom and takes on intellectual challenges energetically. While I have not had the privilege of coaching her, I have watched her play over the last few years. She’s a strong leader on the field and a tough competitor – from my vantage point, she’s an awesome teammate.”

Since 1986, the Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship has provided over $1.2 million to outstanding high school senior student-athletes in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. With this award, the Davey O’Brien Foundation seeks to encourage those qualities that will prepare outstanding young people to assume productive leadership roles in their adult lives.

The foundation awards a $30,000 scholarship for college tuition, room and board, and books each year. The remaining finalists each receive a $2,500 award. The winner will be announced at our annual High School Scholarship Luncheon on November 19 and then honored again at the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Dinner in February.
