Kindergarteners Spread Joy with Teddy Bears
FWCD kindergarteners welcomed a special visitor, Megan Hodges Cook, from Cook Children's Medical Center. She came to campus on Monday, September 23, to accept the donation of nearly 100 teddy bears, donated with love by the students and their families, to the Cook Children’s Prayer Bear program. As the Community Program Coordinator in the medical center’s Child Life Department, Cook strives to make the hospital feel less scary for kids.
Sharing interesting facts about Cook Children’s, such as the hospital being over 100 years old and having 420 beds, Cook asked the students why teddy bears are so important. The answers ranged from “something cozy to love on” to “something to care for.” She explained that donating a teddy bear makes a difference to children who may be scared or nervous about their hospital stay. She also highlighted programs like the Child Life Zone, Laughter League, Carpe Artists Musicians, and the therapy dog program that help bring joy to young patients.
Before leaving, Cook gifted the teachers some Care Bear-themed band aids for any future "boo-boos" and gave teddy bear fidgets for the students to take home. With a warm "thank you," she told the children their donation would bring smiles and comfort to others.
