Wrestlers Joseph Brunson ’25, Esteban Gomez ’26 and Jayda Fulp ’25 attended the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University on February 21-22. Brunson placed in the Top 12, and Gomez wrestled hard in his first national tournament. Fulp’s goals for 2025 went as planned as she added another national title to her belt by defeating a No. 1 ranked Team USA wrestler.
“Going back to Prep Nationals for my fourth year in a row was amazing,” said Fulp. “Knowing I was returning champ from 2024, but seeded second was scary. I had the No. 1 140-pounder Isis France in my weight class. I was shocked, thinking the entire time that I would lose. I went into the match more aggressive than ever before, giving it all I’ve got since it was my last match ever as a senior.”
Seeded No. 2 and the underdog, Fulp was the underdog. She and Head Wrestling Coach Hugo Muñoz worked together on her mental toughness and envisioned winning before she even stepped on the mat.
“This was a very special National Preps for Jayda since she was considered an underdog in the division she won last year,” said Muñoz. “After having a tough week at SPC wrestling boys, she was determined to repeat as National Preps champion.”
Going against the No. 1 seed wasn’t easy, but that didn’t stop Fulp. She thought she had France pinned early on, but it wasn’t called, so they went another round. Fulp pinned her down in the third period to garner another title.
“I was ecstatic,” she said. “I could hear the crowd cheering loudly knowing I beat one of the toughest girls in the country. I am so thankful for Coach Hugo and my wrestling teammates for making this happen.”
Throughout the winter wrestling season, Fulp won four tournaments, including Panhandle Nationals, the Third Annual FWISD Championships, the 2025 Girls Trojan Classic, and the Texas Girls Prep State Tournament.
“I am beyond excited to know that Jayda will leave a lasting legacy as one of the best wrestlers to step on the mat at FWCD,” Muñoz said.
