This year’s Fort Worth Art Dealers Association Gallery Night features a familiar FWCD artist: Lower School Art Teacher Pamela Lancaster. Her art is on exhibit at The Woman’s Club of Fort Worth from noon-9 p.m. on Saturday, September 10. Lancaster provided six pieces. Five are abstract paintings (mixed media, acrylic and watercolor), and one is in the “Stories from the City” category.
With a passion for creating, Lancaster is committed to the theme of preservation in her art: “I have been selected by a jury to be a part of this show that in the end will raise money for the charitable mission of Historic Fort Worth, Inc. Being born and raised in Fort Worth, I feel sentimental about being included in this art exhibition that focuses on our city and the charm it brings,” she notes. “In past years, as well as this year, I’ve participated in a portion of the show called ‘Stories from the City,’ where artists are asked to create a piece of art with the theme of preservation. My previous submissions have featured Glenn Gardens, Downtown Fort Worth, and the Seventh Street Bridge. This year, however, has been the most fun: Dream Park and the big red spider web are my subjects.”
Born and raised in Fort Worth, Lancaster has been painting abstract pieces since her Art Education classes in 2005 when she was studying to be a teacher. She has worked predominantly with oils, but while pregnant and after kids has switched to watercolors and acrylics to add variety and ease.
Lancaster derives her abstract pieces from images she finds captivating. The images can range from photographs she has taken, sketches she has made, or other found images to which she has connected.
“The images are the jumping-off point for my paintings, but, once completed, there is often little to no resemblance between the painting and the original photograph, sketch, or painting,” Lancaster notes. “I observe the beauty in the relationships of the organic forms that I discover within these impressions. Beginning with the concrete image and, using intuition and reaction, I translate it into a subjective work of art.”
Inspired by representational images, Lancaster finds her own voice in the abstraction and reinterpretation of those images. She is not responding to an image’s content but finding meaning in its form.
This is not the first year Lancaster has been involved in Gallery Night. She entered work to a jury to be selected for this show in 2016 and was accepted and asked back for 2017, 2018, 2019, and this year, 2022. Lancaster also is a featured artist at the upcoming "The Middleton" Hotel in Graham. The hotel is located in the downtown square and will be themed around art, showcasing a separate artist in each room.
