In late October, Nara Acuna Guba ’25 and Murphy Hoefer ’25 were reading Caesar’s Commentary on the Gallic Wars in Latin. As they were reading the section on Gallic customs, Halloween was approaching. The two juniors completed in-depth research on the Gallic traditions.

They shared their findings and a special art project with the Middle School Forum Club, fifth and sixth grade students interested in the classics and ancient civilizations. The presentation included the origins of jack-o-lanterns, trick-or-treating, and the crazy creatures associated with Halloween. For the activity, students were tasked with creating their own Halloween monster. The students were given randomized guidelines to follow and used their creativity to bring the monsters to life. Afterward, the whole picture was pieced together by placing all the monsters in a forest.
