Academic Achievement/Awards


The Texas State Junior Classical League, the state organization for students of Latin and ancient Greek, hosted its annual competition virtually on April 23 and 24. Students from FWCD’s Upper School and Middle School competed. In Certamen, the fast-paced team Latin game, the Middle School team comprising Chappell Carter ’25, Wilkes Head ’25, Andrew Lobo ’26 and Akshay Vasudevan ’26 placed fourth in the Novice Division. In the Intermediate (Latin II) Division, the team of Dylan Davis ’24, Walker Gaines ’24, Matthew Lobo ’23 and Arjun Vasudevan ’24 placed fifth.

Price Carter – third place, Geography of the Ancient World

Andrew Lobo – first place, Roman History; second place, Latin Grammar

Sam Saade – third place, Latin Derivatives

Akshay Vasudevan – fourth place, Greek Life and Literature 

 

Eighth Grade (Level 1/2 B)

Nara Acuna Guba – fourth place, Roman Life; fourth place, Latin Vocabulary

Chappell Carter – fourth place, Latin Reading Comprehension; fifth place, Latin Derivatives; cum laude, Pentathlon

Wilkes Head – first place, Geography of the Ancient World; fourth place, Mythology

Maddox Wolfe – third place, Roman History

The 2020-21 academic year has been challenging for Latin competitions since they are usually done in person, and Upper School Latin Teacher Bryan Carlson and Middle School Latin Teacher Clint Hagen want to thank the dedicated students who persevered through this year’s virtual competitions.
