Upper School Teacher Named Outstanding Educator

Upper School Math and Science Teacher Dr. Heather Peace was honored as an Outstanding Educator by the University of Chicago. An Outstanding Educator shapes young minds in meaningful ways—thoughtfully approaching instruction, sharing an infectious love for learning, and caring for students both inside and outside the classroom.

Each year, newly admitted UChicago students have the opportunity to reflect on their time in school and nominate an educator who played a significant role in their education, made a positive impact in their lives, and whose influence has brought them to where they are today. Henry Lynn ’21 nominated Dr. Peace.

In the letter Dr. Peace received learning of this accolade, there was a note from Lynn: 

“Thank you for being an awesome math teacher the two years I was in your class. Thank you for designing cool projects, driving to math competitions, writing hundreds of challenge problems, and keeping class fun. Keep up the fight against Batman; if you train enough students, we can defeat him in the end.” 

Dr. Peace is known for creating complex Multivariable Calculus problems and trying to sabotage Batman in order to engage her students. “It is so nice to be acknowledged,” she said. “Recognition of any kind brings joy to the person being recognized and joy to the person who makes the recognition. Gratitude is a catalyst for happiness. This award is an example of that. If you see the world as bigger than you are, you can take comfort that you are part of it.” 

Dr. Peace recently returned to writing poetry after a long hiatus, and she shared this poem with the community: At the Core of a FWCD Teacher. 

All award winners receive a commemorative award and certificate. More than one-third of UChicago’s incoming class responds with inspiring teaching and learning stories each year.
