Certamen is back and in person! Fifteen Middle and Upper School Latin students traveled to Austin on December 4 to compete in their first in-person certamen tournament since February 2020. Certamen is a fast-paced game where students “buzz in” to answer questions about the Latin language, Roman history and life, and classical mythology.

In the Middle School division, the eighth-grade team of Price Carter, Jake Hudman, Andrew Lobo, and Akshay Vasudevan placed fourth, amassing 410 points. The seventh-grade team, playing short-handed with only three players — Aiden Alband, Alex Schwartz, and Grant Walton — rose to the occasion and scored 145 points, beating out four other teams.

In the Intermediate (Latin II) division, the dynamic duo of Nara Acuna Guba ’25 and Wilkes Head ’25 placed sixth.

In the Advanced (Latin III and higher) division, the team of Jack Fishman ’23, George Fleischauer ’23, and Mohid Sadiq ’23 placed fourth, missing the top three by only 15 points. A second team of Walker Gaines ’24, Matthew Lobo ’23, and Arjun Vasudevan ’24 placed 6th.

Latin Teachers Clint Hagen and Bryan Carlson would like to congratulate all of these students for representing FWCD so well in their performance and behavior. They would also like to thank Kathy Roemer for chaperoning and Sheila Cherry for taking the group safely to and from Austin.’25
