Athletics Achievement/Awards


FWCD Falcons had a great showing at the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Championships on April 28-30. Sutton Howard ’23 (field) and Rachel Nelson ’23 (track) joined Connor Henry ’24 (golf) as SPC Conference Champions. Howard was first in the shot put (runner-up in discus), and Nelson was first in the 100m, 200m, and 400m races. Many other student-athletes had personal records. The boys and girls tennis, baseball, and softball teams had winning records this spring: Overall, these four teams finished 52-25-1 on the year.  

“I’m very proud of our spring student-athletes and coaches,” said Athletic Director Leigh Block. “We were very competitive across the board and brought home some excellent results home from the SPC tournament.”  

Track and Field

FWCD track teams had outstanding performances at Awty International School. The 4x100 relay team of Paul Ray ’23, Rob Batton ’23, Jackson Brockway ’24, and Bryce Evans ’24 finished fourth; Ray was ninth in the 100m; Evans 10th and Brockway 11th in the 200m; Sawyer Parker ’22 placed 11th in the 3200m and 12th in the 1600m; Batton was sixth in the 300m hurdles; Hunter Hyde ’23 was seventh in the 300m hurdles and eighth in the 110m hurdles; and Batton was 11th in the shot put.

Nelson ’23 finished first in the 100m, 200m, and 400m races; Murphy Hoefer ’25 was 12th in the 3200m; Finleigh Ashburn ’25 was ninth in the 100m hurdles; Mimi Cauble ’23 was 11th in the 100m hurdles. Howard ’23 finished second in the discus and first in shot put.

During the two-day meet, Parker, Hyde, Batton, Nelson, Reese Packer ’25, Jaya Conmy ’25, Cauble, and Jada Bailey ’25 all had personal records.

Baseball 

Varsity baseball lost a close game at John Cooper on April 28, but bounced back to finish 2-1 in the tournament, outscoring Episcopal School of Dallas and Greenhill School 22-8 on April 29 and April 30. The Falcons ended their season 16-9.

Softball

Softball lost to Kinkaid on April 29, 15-14, in extra-innings. On April 30, FWCD won 6-5 over Hockaday, with that game also going to extra-innings. Overall, the Falcons were 18-5-1 on the season.

Tennis

Boys tennis lost on April 28 to the eventual SPC Champion John Cooper School; on April 29, the Falcons played a very competitive match against Awty International School, but came up a little short, losing 3-2. Overall, the boys had a terrific season, one of the best in recent history, finishing 8-6-1.

Girls tennis played three matches in Houston down to the wire – losing to St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, 3-2, but defeating Episcopal School of Dallas and Houston Christian by 3-2 scores. Line one doubles team of Abbie Klein ’23 and Caroline Klein ’23 went 3-0 in SPC. Vivian Todora ’23, Rhea Alexander ’24, and Dabin Lee ’24 also had winning records in SPC. The team finished 9-6 on the year.

Lacrosse

The FWCD lacrosse team finished fourth in SPC, falling short to Trinity Valley School to play in the championship game and then an unfortunate loss against St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in the fourth-place game. Rogan Crumley 22, Andrew Edwards '24, and George Soye '22 ended the tournament with 7 points each, Luke Tierce '24 had a save percentage of 52%, and Rylee Leo '22 finished with 16 ground balls through the tournament. The team overall finished 6-9 this season. 

Golf 

FWCD’s boys and girls golf teams competed in the SPC Championship on April 25 and 26 at Pecan Valley Golf Course. Connor Henry ’23 earned the SPC Championship title, and the boys team, comprising Henry, Mason Harper ’25, Jack Stewart ’23, Jackson Bobo ’22, T.C. Chovanec ’22, finished fourth. Henry shot a 64, an SPC Tournament record, on April 25, followed by a 67 on Tuesday to best the rest of the field by 10 shots. 

The girls team, Elizabeth Dike ’25, Maya Witzel ’25, Mary Kathryn King ’25, Sadie Peterson ’25, and Laura Marques ’24, showed their resilience and competitive spirit throughout the tournament. The girls played 10 rounds in two days, and nine were personal bests.
